How can I volunteer for CALM?

Volunteers are essential to CALM’s success – spreading the word, starting conversations and taking CALM to places we otherwise couldn’t reach. CALM volunteers get up to all sorts, including:

  • Cheering on runners at marathons and races
  • Representing CALM at events like gigs, sports matches, plays, festivals and open days
  • Helping out CALM with your specific talents and expertise on the skills bank

The Volunteer Programme is focused on raising awareness of CALM and supporting CALM HQ. Our life-saving phoneline and webchat services are run by highly trained, paid professionals who provide direct support to those who need it most. We’re unable to provide volunteer placements in any kind of mental health support roles or on our helpline. The programme is not a progression platform to working on  the helpline.

What will I get out of volunteering?

As a volunteer, you’ll be supporting CALM to tackle suicide and campaign for long-term culture change. Beyond making a positive impact, there’s plenty you’ll get out of volunteering for CALM, such as:

  • In-depth induction for Street Team volunteers
  • Support from the CALM team
  • Opportunities to develop your own skills – including interpersonal skills, confidence, initiative and empathy
  • Experience working with a rapidly-growing charity running world-changing campaigns

Got some questions before you start? Get in touch with us here and of our team will be happy to answer any questions.

Street Team

CALM’s Street Team gets out and about to raise awareness of CALM, our services and the issue of suicide. Opportunities are varied depending on your availability and interests, but you can expect to be talking to people about CALM at different kinds of events.

Before joining the Street Team, volunteers have an induction session to get skilled up and confident discussing CALM. We have these every other month, and spaces are limited! Whilst we’re working on expanding across the UK, most Street Team volunteering currently takes place in London.

Skills Bank

From photographers and filmmakers to researchers and data analysts, we are immensely lucky to benefit from the time and expertise of supporters who give their skills in support of CALM. There are many skills you can offer in support of CALM – just remember to include examples of your work or any relevant qualifications when you get in touch.

In your workplace

Many companies get involved in CALM volunteering through the workplace, with great benefits for employees such as team building and the chance to develop skills. Volunteering is just one of the ways your workplace can support CALM – find out more here.
